A month behind the hype : Vampire Weekend

In 6-8 weeks time Vampire Weekend went from nowhere to the cover of Spin. Generally I stay away from the "oh my Gawd, have you heard of ....." bands because they always seem to disappoint. The last time a band received this much hype I thought they sucked. And yes, I'm talking about the Arcade Fire. But lets get back on track here...
Yesterday I finally gave Vampire Weekend's debut album a listen after hearing their name every day for a month. Turns out it is actually good. Really fucking good. I listened to it three times yesterday good. I got up this morning, made a pot of coffee and couldn't wait to listen to it again good. (I'm starting to sound like that annoying yogurt commercial).
Does it sound like Paul Simon? Yes, sometimes. Much like the last Spoon album sounds like Billy Joel. But it is hard not to draw comparisons to someone else these days, nearly everything has been done before. Fact is, this is not Paul Simon, this is a new original work that is the most listenable piece of new music I've found in quite some time. There are no bad songs on the album, I never skip a single track, and that is a very rare thing.

I like Paul Simon. Please tell me this is not their Bad Ass single that is going to hook me on them. I'd like to find a new band, that I liked. Posted by: john at March 4, 2008 9:14 PM |

I'm not quite sure we have similar musical tastes. I don't know that they have a 'bad ass single' ... although maybe CD101 might play them. That being said, the track I posted is pretty indicative of the album, so if you don't like it you probably won't like them. Posted by: ryan at March 5, 2008 8:05 PM |
