11 Days Without Sleep

Posted by ryan at 12:12 PM in health , holy shit , science . | 3 Comments

Beginning yesterday, Tony Wright began his quest to break the now 43 year old world record for sleep deprivation. He is attempting to go sleepless for over 11 days. You can track his progress online and watch him via webcam for the next 11 days. (the webcam seemed to be down so maybe he fell asleep).

The current record set by then 17 year old Randy Gardner is 264 hours (exactly 11 days).

Update:Tony left a comment below regarding the claims by the National Sleep Research Project of the record being 18 days 21 hours for a person who won a chair rocking contest. Tony tracked down that individual and learned that they were allowed to break for 2 hours a day.

This is an email from the man who set a rocking in a rocking chair record of 18 days 21 hours. He does not claim to have stayed awake during the record for obvious reasons below.

"Ahoy Tony",
(WOW) The Rocking Chair Record ?!
That was a long time ago in Oakhurst California USA in April 1986 world record no.19 of the 30 attempts to date.
At the time the record was set at 444hours 2hour and 20minute short of 19days.
I was allowed 5min breaks every hour or 2hours everyday as I remember it.
after day ten I could rock & sleep at the same time without stopping
Did I Hallucinate??? (NA) ..."I'm A Sea Captain"
WEEEEEEEE !!!! .."Ha Ha"

Hey Tony! Thanks for stopping in. I suppose you have a lot of free time on your hands right now. ; )

I figured the 11 day record was more legit, the other claim and website seemed questionable.

Good luck!

Oh yes, I'll also edit the information above in case anyone misses the comments.
