What ever happened to the Million Dollar Homepage?

Remember the Million Dollar Homepage that was so popular back in late 05, early 06? No? Not many other people seem to remember it either. Makes you wonder if the $1M spent on the revolutionary idea of pixel advertising ever paid off.

Take a look at the traffic drop off after the hype was over in early 06.

Now compare it to a site like digg.com and the traffic from the Million Dollar Homepage's hayday doesn't look so impressive anymore..

To be fair, Alexa changes its algo around March 2006, as you can see on the graph. It is better to compare the ranks.

Some more points:
MDH made money in 6 months.
MDH was a simple website (Digg runs on dozens of servers).
More important: neither Digg nor MDH visitors convert. Better get some more targeted ads ;)

You are definitely right on all of those points. Pulling in a quick $mil with such a simple site and idea was nothing short of amazing. I was just curious what kind of traffic falloff there was when the buzz was over... and it was huge.

I don't think this site is going to make me rich any day soon. It's more like a penny jar that I have sitting around. ; )

Well, he made his million dollars quickly with potentially low overhead. I give him kudos for a well thought out project although I think the people that paid him probably didn't get their mony's worth.
