Useless but Fun Mac Apps

MegaMan Effect
The MegaManEffect is an application that emulates an effect seen in the classic NES game Mega Man 2. When you launch an OS X application, the screen goes dark, stars sweep the night sky and your application’s icon is presented in a blue letter box bar with a cheesy 8-bit music introduction.
MacSaber
Now that you've spent entirely too much money on your fancy sudden motion sensor equipped Mac laptop, I predict you'll soon be swinging it around like a loon.
Introducing MacSaber 1.0 Beta. Using your Mac’s sudden motion sensor, this software turns your computer into a Jedi weapon almost worthy of taking on the real thing by making authentic lightsaber sound effects. It senses speed for the lightsaber movement sounds and acceleration for different levels of striking sounds.
SmackBook Pro
Uses the sudden motion sensor in Mac laptops to allow you to switch desktops by slapping the sides of your MacBook or PowerBook.

I didn't know they had a motion sensor, that's cool. Oh man that mega man effect KICKS ASS. Posted by: polamex at June 1, 2006 7:49 PM |

Yeah, the motion sensor stuff is cool. The original purpose was to detect sudden rapid movement so that the heads could be pulled back off the harddrive to prevent damage in case of a fall. It's pretty cool, it tells you about the acceleration, pitch and tilt of your laptop. Posted by: ryan at June 1, 2006 10:12 PM |

The hd head removal thing sounds volkswagon-y to me. Elaborate shit more prone to breakage than its less elaborate counterpart, thrown in by a single company for a bullet on a feature list to get new models out the door. Which would be great of course, if it was thoroughly testing for long term durability. :) So how were these apps developed privately? Does apple give the masses free APIs or is that a hack? Privately, the API is public. I think Apple has a quality record much higher than any major PC manufacturer. Posted by: ryan at June 3, 2006 12:57 AM |

Well I guess I had this "ipods are only supposed to last one year" thing in mind too. Posted by: polamex at June 3, 2006 1:02 AM |
|
1 year... I only read a headline a day or two ago. Was 1 year just the manufacturer's warranty, and some guy made a stupid big deal about it, and it got famous because he mentioned the ipod? Posted by: polamex at June 3, 2006 1:05 AM |
|
What piece of electronics has a warranty greater than 1 year? Hell, most things come with 90 day warranties. We have a 1st Gen 5gb iPod from 2001, it runs just fine. Posted by: ryan at June 3, 2006 3:09 AM |

Yeah I think I got confused with Steve's quote. Posted by: polamex at June 3, 2006 10:11 AM |
