Scott Lawrence created a miniature arcade cabinet using an ipod nano to run mame, take a look at how he made it here.

Pretty cool, though it's gotta hurt your eyes after a while.

That is pretty awesome. I've been tempted to install Linux on my iPod, but not really tempted enough to actually do it. Posted by: ryan at April 12, 2006 11:14 AM |

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to install linux onto your ipod? Posted by: jt at April 13, 2006 12:09 AM |

That is the only way you can do things like run MAME on the iPod. The iPod in this cabinet is running linux. You can also watch videos on the iPod nano if you install linux. Posted by: ryan at April 13, 2006 11:24 AM |

Is it really worth it to take up the space to run software that's basically not meant to run with the hardware? I mean, it seems like a chore to even play mrs. pacman on the damn thing. It looks cool but after the picture is taken are you really accomplishing anything? Are there any applications for linux that would work on the nano? There isn't much space to work with. Well, linux is extremely customizable. The linux that runs on an iPod is extremely lightweight and it isn't anything like the linux you install on a computer other than some of the core components. You have to think, the iPod is already running an operating system anyway to handle the menus, games and other features. But you have no control over adding or removing features. Installing linux just replaces that Apple created operating system with linux so that you are free to do more with your iPod -- for instance, make your nano play videos or play games.
