Apple sued over iPod volume

Posted by ryan at 02:05 PM in apple . | 5 Comments

Ahh, how I love bullshit lawsuits. Apple is facing a class action lawsuit over the iPod. The lawsuit states that Apple does not adequetly warn owners of the risks of hearing loss when listening to the iPod at high volumes.

If you have an iPod at home, open up your manual, it clearly states that listening at high volume can lead to hearing loss.

I for one think the volume of the iPod is one of its great features. Of course, I have higher than normal hearing loss for someone my age. But I don't blame Apple, I blame Rock & Roll.

An interesting bit of iPod history -- during the development phase of the first iPod, Steve Jobs forced engineers to lift the maximum volume levels of the iPod because of his own hearing problems.

I have to admit I started laughing last night when I saw the story on the news! I'm sure there is some precedent somewhere since all the "walkman's" have been around for decades now. What's funny is that the story said the guy filing the lawsuit hadn't even seen a doctor yet to see if he really had hearing loss.

I was going to say, isn't "earbud" just a new-fangled word for "earphones"? I believe I've hated sticking "earphones" in my ears for several years now. Doesn't dude think listening to something really loud that you've placed as close to your ear drum as possible might, oh, cause some hearing loss?

I'm not sure where I originally heard this, but I've heard it multiple times. Macworld points to Wired as a source to this claim:

"Apple's iPod offers higher volume than many other music players because Apple CEO Steve Jobs is hard of hearing, Wired alleges."
