The Million Dollar Homepage

Posted by ryan at 10:48 PM in internet . | 21 Comments

This is one of those things that: 1) could only happen on the Internet, 2) is so simple you wish you thought of it.

A student named Alex Tew decided to create a website where he would sell each of the 1 million pixels (in a 1000x1000 pixel image map) for $1 a piece. The pixels are sold in 10x10 blocks for $100 a piece, and you can buy as many as you want. It is an image map which means the pixels you buy are clickable links to whatever site you are advertising. For your advertising investment, Alex guarantees the site to remain unchanged for 5 years.

Here is the part that will make you sick. In 3 weeks he has sold 1/4 of the pixels, thus banking $250,000 so far.

A funny side story: Somone bought 6 blocks ($600) on milliondollarhomepage to advertise their site, http://www.20centpixels.com/. So far the investment has yet to pay off. Only 20 blocks have been sold on 20 cent pixels, totaling $400 in revenue.

Poor 20 cents a pixel man. Trying to ride the coat-tails of a good idea and coming up short. Keep on truckin' man.

There is a link on the 20 cent a pixel site to http://www.onepennypixel.com/. We need a disjointed advertisement there!

I don't have that kind of money!

You will after tomorrow baby!

my idea would be to do some kind of high end expensive pixel sale. 10 dollar pixels. have a bit less of them. claim that they will be around longer or something i donno.

Like, one one million dollar pixel?

Posted by: ryan at October 7, 2005 5:24 PM

So does each one of those squares represent a 'pixel' or are you buying a true pixel for a dollar?

Posted by: jt at October 7, 2005 9:06 PM

Each square is 100 pixels (10x10), you have to purchase the pixels in blocks of 100 ($100).

onemilliondollarpixel.com would be sweet.

Hahaha. Someone just wasted $8.99.

There are literally hundreds of copycat sites now. I like the $10 million dollar homepage with the slogan "Taking pixel advertising to the next level." Oooooh, how proactive of them!

Hey me too. Actually I feel this is great fun, and I like his idea alot. Obviously, because I am http://www.dollarpixel.com It's just really fun and I'm already happy with my results. xoxo Meg

Ahhh, comment spam.

Nice website, some might say revolutionary. I like how the grid background is totally off balance from the "pixel ads" you are having trouble selling.

The hundred or so fake pixel ads from your "sponsors" are also a nice touch.

Hey everyone.

I just ran across this website that allows you to post pictures of yourself (singles) or you and your loved one (couples), to "show your love to the world", so to say...it's a pretty cute idea to surprise someone on their birthday or on an anniversary. Romantic and in good spirits. I saw pics of people who are already married, and people who are getting married, etc. You can also link that small pic or symbol to a new page which shows a blown-up version of the small pic...pretty cool! I guess people can advertise outside of this "heart of love" as well...
Anyway...here's the link...check it out and let me know what you think! :-)

Check out http://www.PixelAds4All.com - they offer a FREE 100 by 100 pixel "tool tip image" with the purchase of your ad, which acts like a billboard for your site! They are also currently offering their pixels for 50% off, or $50 USD for a 100 pixel block.
