If you don't look out the window, it's not really happening

Is anyone else disgusted by the lack of network media coverage in New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf states? Millions of our citizens are facing an unparalled disaster right now that is all but being ignored by the likes of NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX. For days after 9/11 and the tsunami every network had days of nonstop commercial free coverage of the events as they unfolded. This kind of coverage prompts citizens from all over the country to get personally involved through donation and volunteering.
A spotlight needs to be put on this situation to not only get the public involved, but to put pressure on the government to take swift and heavy measures at providing relief.

Ive been reading the NYTimes for my news exclusively this week and they have had a fair amount of coverage. I have felt that there isnt a lot of attention being paid to the situation however, compared to 9/11 and the tsunami. I havent heard a thing about other countries sending food, supplies, money, etc to the victims of our nation's catastrophe. I recall Bush getting lambasted for his initial proposal of 15M to help the tsunami victims. Maybe the media isnt reporting it, or maybe the rest of the world doesnt care ? I wouldnt expect other countries to pour that kind of support into this nation, as it is considerably more well of than Thailand (i think), but I would expect the world to at least acknowledge it happened. Maybe this is just another aspect of news that isnt being reported by our media. Posted by: gizmo at September 1, 2005 4:00 PM |

I happened to be reading your post gizmo, with CNN on in the background, and they went through a list of countries that offered help. They said that help was originally turned down but then today accepted. Or something like that. The countries that offered what they could were, and ones I can remember: Isreal, Sri Lanka, Japan, Canada, Germany,...the others are already out of my head but maybe you could find the report at www.cnn.com. Just saw another report, quite interesting. European countries have oil researves, like we've got, and are releasing oil from these reserves into the U.S. supplies. Thought it was interesting b/c rather than sending food, or troops for the ground, they decided to send the substance that helps the entire society run. I check the Times of India (timesofindia.com -- warning, popups galore) pretty much daily and I don't think there was a single day when a story about New Orleans was on the front page. Even clicking on the "international" news section I have often had to scroll down to even read a blurb about it. Posted by: ryan at September 2, 2005 1:38 PM |

Just curious, did any newspapers back home cover the "100 year flood" that happened in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany 4 weeks ago? Posted by: Hugh at September 3, 2005 10:15 AM |

Didnt hear or read anything about a 100 year flood. Turns out the first countries to offer help were Cuba and Venezuela.. Castro was offering to send some 1500 doctors with medicine, an offer he has now upped to over 5000, & has not gotten a response. Hugo Chavez offered a million gallons of oil. I just saw this yesterday on the CNN ticker, but Carlos called home to Peru & his parents told him these guys were actually the first to offer aid according to the news there... More evidence that our "liberal" media is under the thumb of the white house. sigh Posted by: gizmo at September 6, 2005 12:01 PM |
