Philadelphia: The Next Borough

The New York Times has a writeup about the transplant of New Yorkers to Philadelphia, touting the city as the new Brooklyn and "The Next Borough".

While the article claims Philadelphians sometimes refer to themselves as the "sixth borough", I have to disagree and add that one would get their ass kicked around here for saying that.

"We got priced out of Manhattan, and we moved to Brooklyn," said John Schmersal, 32, of the three-member band Enon; two of them migrated here in January. "Then we got priced out of Brooklyn. Now we're in Philadelphia."

You know, that John Schmersal dude is originally from Dayton. Seriously.

Am I the only one who gets annoyed with New Yorkers who think that New York is just the bee's knees? I find it really grating. Why can't Philadelphia just be Philadelphia and not a new hip place for New Yorkers to hang out? Other cities have identities too, New York.

I realize the article is from NYT, but I stand by my irritation.

Hey, I can't agree more. I think the author felt like she was dishing out compliments to Philadelphia but they were delivered in such a condescending way that it negated them.

If New York is the bee's knees then Philadelphia is the cat's pajamas.

Philebrity interviewed the author of the article this week about the backlash from Philadelphians.
