Aeon Flux

Back in the day, I was a big fan of Liquid Television. One feature that always intrigued me was Aeon Flux. On one hand, I like watching a hardass woman running around shooting up the place. However, it had a very palpable aesthetic that made it admirably unique, and I was never sure how I felt about it.

Now someone is making a movie of Aeon Flux, starring Charlize Theron. And judging by what I've gathered so far, it's going to lick donkey balls. Want to know why?

Because Charlize Theron is too pretty to play Aeon Flux. And I'm shocked to be writing this, but she's wearing too much clothing. And everything looks to be super polished. Basically, someone went and cleaned up Aeon Flux when the thing that defined the original was how dirty it was.

It's summed up by the intro to the official movie website. In the original shorts, the introduction featured a fly landing on a woman's eyeball. On the movie website, the fly lands just above, on her eyelid. It's sanitized.

I loved Aeon Flux back when it was on Liquid Television. I didn't get in to it much when MTV tried to make a standalone series of it (30 min episodes).

A sanitized version would be weak. The violence of Aeon Flux was always spectacular (think Kill Bill, Battle Royal, Takashi Miike style).

Boo.

Yeah, my only hope is that they sanitized the aesthetic in order to be able to maintain the level of violence.

But I doubt it.

Liquid Television was great. It used to be on before 120 Minutes, which was just about the coolest thing ever.

I heard about this movie a while ago, and I just can't see this as a live action thing at all. The cartoon was so exaggerated, so inhuman I just don't think it would translate to real people. What stuck with me about Aeon Flux was how ridiculously long she was - like an insect, a walking stick or something. Unless they can make her legs twice the length of her torso, I just don't think it will work.

They should have cast Carrie-Anne Moss. She has that really severe look that would be perfect. And she is kind of insectile too. Doll-face up there just doesn't cut it.

I found the abstractness of Aeon Flux to be the best part about it. I only liked the shorts which kept some amount of mystery.
