Discovery Times aired Promises this evening, a 2001 documentary that followed 7 Jewish and Palestinian children over several years. The children, residents of Jerusalem and the West Bank, discuss their opinions on the affairs of their people and place in the world. It is an amazing glimpse at the impressionable youth growing up with a continuous struggle surrounding them. In the end some of the children meet for a day and (in my opinion) learn more than their parents could ever teach them. As a bonus, the television airing has updated interviews with the children (now aged 15-19) from 2004.
It will be airing again multiple times tomorrow on Discovery Times (7am, 1pm, 3pm) if you get this station and are interested in watching/Tivoing it up.

Sorry I can't see it. My latest language class here has been interesting in many ways, and the diversity of where the students come from is one of these ways. Among people from every continent, there is a Muslim guy that is from Isreal and another from the Gaza strip. I have enjoyed talking with them over a beer (ha, actually I'm the only one drinking alcohol) about current events and more than talking, I enjoy listening to how they view world events, people, and situations. I find the relationship between alcohol and converstation kind of interesting. If one gets completely drunk they will become a complete idiot. But at the same time I've read that alcohol in moderation can act as a lubricant for thinking. I went to my parent's house a couple of days ago and drank two shots of vodka with my dad before dinner. Then later, while we ate, we had a crazy 1.5 hour conversation about Islam, radical Islam, Mohammed's teachings and also Mohammed's behavior (which apparently conflict). Anyway, it was great and I know it wouldn't have happened without a couple of drinks. Posted by: polamex at July 9, 2005 5:43 AM |
