I've never been bothered by telemarketers all too much. Generally I just hang up on them and that is the end of it. However, over the past month I have received somewhere between 40-50 calls from Chase Manhattan. Tracy has a Chase card and they have been relentlessly trying to pedal some rip-off payment protection service to her.
Since I work at home I am always the one to receive the calls. For the first half dozen calls I politely told the caller that Tracy was not available, they never left a message. When they started upping it to two calls a day to get a hold of her, I started to become irate and asked to be removed from their list. I also called Chase's internal do-not-call registry (just call the 888 858-9823 number and follow the prompts) and registered our phone number.
At some point about two weeks ago the calls were still coming in twice a day, but now Chase was hanging up the phone whenever I answered. I always knew it was Chase because their phone number was available on my caller ID.
To test my theory that I specifically was being hung up on I performed an experiment over the past week. Every other call I would pick up the phone and be completely silent, for the other half of the calls I simply answered with a "hello". For the 4 calls I was silent, after 10-15 seconds the telemarketer asked for Tracy. For the 5 calls I answered with a "hello", I was immediately hung up on.
This morning Chase called again at the usual 9:30am. I was silent. After 15 seconds of silence a woman asked for Tracy. I spoke up, "Does your computer screen instruct you to hang up if a male answers the phone?" She stuttered for a few seconds, not sure how to answer. She asked for Tracy again. I commenced with a tongue lashing and asked to speak to a supervisor. Repeat tongue lashing for the hang up calls and insert threat of canceling both our Chase cards if another call is received. I'll keep you posted if it worked.
My caller ID log for Chase from the last week:

That's horrible, I can't believe they resort to those kinds of measures. Posted by: polamex at July 19, 2005 6:37 PM |

Isnt there a "do not call" registry nationwide? If you are really on Chase's do not call list (or a state or federal one) they can be fined $10,000 per call I believe. I would definitely look into reporting this with the proper authorities. This is totally unacceptable. Are you still receiving calls after you chewed these folks out? Today was the first business day in a month that they did not call. Posted by: ryan at July 20, 2005 5:47 PM |

You should just keep f-ing with them Rdogg. Seriously. It can get really, really funny. Try different tacts, the old "she's dead and I'm sad" thing works well, I used to do it at home with the rents (I once had a caller keep trying to sell me shit after I told her my Mom died the night before, what a bitch :). You could always draw them into your own line of questioning like "do you know how to get blood out of cotton? It's all over the place." or "You sound cute, can you tell me how much an ounce of meth should cost normally? I think my dude is ripping me off". Have some fun with these people, sometimes you can really get an interesting response. They're calling you, always keep that in mind, just fuck with 'em. Either they will leave you alone or you will have more and more entertaining calls. Posted by: jt at July 20, 2005 11:51 PM |

I put this 888-858-9823 into google and came up with this website. We used to be with Bank One and they switched to Chase, now I am getting more than 20 calls a day from this number! I asked them not to call and now I quit answering and they just hang on to my answering machine until it kicks them off. They fill it up so no one else can leave a message. I just now registered with their do not call list thanks to this site. Last time I answered I turned up Rob Zombie music really, really, really loud and started screaming into the phone, "I can't hear you, HELLO? HELLO? Your gonna hafta speak up, dude, I can't hear you!" Until they hung up on me. That's when they started hanging on my answering machine. Anyway, thanks for the do not call tip! We have also received dozens and dozens of calls. Each time I had to get up to check caller ID and saw this number, I just shook my head and put off dealing with it because I always seem to be busy with more important things. I want to thank you for posting this info. When I get repeated calls from the same # and a message is never left, I put that number into a search engine or do a reverse look-up at anywho.com. When your sight came up and I learned it was Chase, I answered the next call and politely asked them to remove my number from their call list. The calls stopped for a few weeks. When they started up again, it was relentless, night and day. I went back to your web posting and have been reading about how annoying their practices are. I can't afford the energy to get angry about this. So, I simply do what I can to solve and move on. This time, I decided to call the number back. A computer voice answered, thanking me for calling Chase, asking if I wanted to apply for a card, telling me that if I need customer service for my credit account I should call the customer service number on the back of my card, and, finally, offering me the option of registering my phone # on their No Call list. I registered my number. Maybe I will be removed permanently this time. If these calls continue, I plan to make two more calls. One to Chase's real customer service number. These sales calls usually come from an affilliant that is trying to sell their insurance product, not from the bank, itself. If this company does not solve this problem, I will expect the bank to solve it. If they do not, my next call will be to the government agencies that handle complaints of this type. I am registered on both the state and federal NO Call list. I will report that I feel Chase should be taken to task for abusing calling priviledges to their current patrons. If this does not solve the issue, I will then contact my state and federal representatives to issue a formal complaint to the FCC for abuse of communication lines. I will also cancel my account with Chase all together. I would like to recommend that anyone who is annoyed by this take a similar line of action. I have had both good and bad experiences with Chase over the many years I have had an account with them. Recently, my card number was accidently misused by a well known magazine publisher. Chase's fraud department handled the whole affair most effectively and efficiently. They changed my card number, sent out new cards promptly, dealt with the company that made the mistake in such a way that they left me a credit balance to compensate for the inconvenience. I would at least give them a chance to deal with the affiliate company that is abusing their patrons. Anyone in business knows it doesn't pay to annoy your customers excessively. Most of the people making these sales calls are part-time folks who are working 2 jobs or going to school. Many are very young or new to the country and are told what to say. They are only there to sell and have no policies or proceedure guidelines for problem solving. It is easy to frustrate them and leave them feeling helpless. Some of them are paid very little and some work only for commission. Some are quite young and really don't know what they are doing. They can't help you solve this frustration. There are agencies that can. Thanks, again, for helping me understand how widespread this problem is. Posted by: Cyphter at August 3, 2005 2:19 PM |

Does anyone have a customer service number for Chase? I do not have an account with them, either does my business, and they call my business phone number at least 3 times every day. I am registered on the "Do not call list" by calling back the number on caller ID, but I want to speak with someone to make that effective immediately. I'm not putting up with this harrassment for another 30 days until the Do Not Call is effective. I would greatly appreciate a customer service number for Chase Posted by: Trisha at September 16, 2005 10:38 AM |

Call the number back (888-858-9823) It gives you an option to be taken off of their telemarketing list I just did it..... Posted by: steve at October 19, 2005 3:25 PM |

The Do Not Call Registry doesn't apply to firms that you have done business with in the past several months (can't remember how many exactly), so they can call any of their current customers as often as they want. And I'm sure their internal DNC list isn't worth half a damn. Oh well, guess Chase just lost a customer. :-) Posted by: S at October 21, 2005 7:27 PM |

Don't just call chase.. everyone should register a complaint on www.donotcall.gov Their internal call list won't stop them.. make a complaint with the FCC NOW!!! www.donotcall.gov Posted by: DS at October 21, 2005 11:48 PM |

The Do Not Call Registery from the gov doesn't stop them from calling. Anything that is a service you have, Chase CC, Charity, or Campaining, can call you. It's only calls where a place is trying to sell you something you aren't part of, such as Telemarkesting. I am so tired of these calls now that I dont even pick up my phone and leave a nice message for them on my machine. If you get calls, I bet it be from a CC you have or some Charity organization. Other calls that can be made that don't apply are surveys since they aren't selling you anything.
