"It's True"

Some notes on Steve Job's keynote today at the WWDC. The long and short of it: Apple is moving to x86 starting next year with the full move completing in 2007. This isn't to say that your new G5 will be extinct, PowerPC Macs will be supported for some time to come.
Here are some of the more exciting tidbits:
Apple has been developing a translation layer for x86 to PPC called Rosetta that will be completely transparent to the user. Jobs demoed an x86 Mac running Photoshop CS2 with all the plugins working properly and without much speed difference using Rosetta.
Starting today you can order your very own Developer Kit, complete with a 3.6Ghz P4 running OSX 10.4.1 directly from Apple. Expected to be available in 2 weeks.

Oh a little of both maybe. It is big news.. whether it is good big news or bad big news, I haven't decided. I'll hold on to my shares in the meantime. I think Apple has staying power. Posted by: ryan at June 9, 2005 11:35 AM |

From my cube buddy: For all those wondering what Steve Jobs was thinking, here are two articles that attempt to throw some light on the situation.
Apple vs Microsoft (Read Intel vs Microsoft)
“Enter Apple. This isn't a story about Intel gaining another three percent market share at the expense of IBM, it is about Intel taking back control of the desktop from Microsoft.” – Robert Cringely Posted by: polamex at June 10, 2005 12:26 PM |

Cringely is crazy, the man thinks that Apple and Intel are going to merge. Posted by: ryan at June 13, 2005 9:17 AM |
