Vintage personal hygiene ads

Ad*Access Project collects images and database information for over 7,000 advertisements printed in U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines between 1911 and 1955. Don't miss the ads for "feminine hygiene".

This one is for a liquid antiseptic germicide.

My mom collects vintage magazines (she especially likes "Better Homes and Gardens", circa 1920) and the ads are totally the best part. Some of them are surprisingly straight forward, all things considered. Posted by: Emily at May 4, 2005 7:38 PM |

I've known about Ad*Access for a bit over a year now, but it seems that not too many people did. Since WeMakeMoneyNotArt posted the story VIA my blog, it's been showing up all over, on other blogs, del.icio.us, everywhere =) Hope people enjoy the find, it's an awesome resource and a great collection, not to mention a humorous look at the past! The "next" button didn't work for me, and I had to go back to the index every time. Fuck that. I don't need to look at old ads for vagina paraphenalia that badly. Posted by: karen at May 5, 2005 1:59 PM |

Can you really afford *not* to look at them? "Isn't it a shame when a woman doesn't realize how important it is to always but ZONITE in her fountain syringe? Failure to practice hygiene (internal cleanliness) often results in such needless tragedies - homes broken up, few social invitations, the feeling of being shunned without knowing why." http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/adaccess/BH/BH02/BH0213-150dpi.jpeg Posted by: ryan at May 5, 2005 2:06 PM |

And oh man, how cool is that Jonas has known about this site for a year? Holy shit! He must be some sort of god of the internet. I'm all aflutter to be writing a comment on the same blog as him. I wonder if he would let me wash his feet sometime. Posted by: karen at May 5, 2005 2:11 PM |
