The Enlightenment

So, there are some mysteries in life that we may never know the answers to. Is time continuous or discrete? Is the universe infinite? Are those two the same question?

People spend their lives searching for answers to the questions that tickle their minds. Philosophers and physicists, ecologists and doctors lead their lives in the search for enlightenment. And we all enjoy the benefits of science and technology.

It is our nature to explore. To never let go of the questions that haunt our minds without an answer. And last week, the angels came down and shone a light into the darkness as I experienced my own personal enlightenment to a question that has hounded me for years:

What is the deal with Super Mario Brothers 2? The game play is completely foreign from any other games in that series. Why? Why the pulling up of turnips and the sinking into large pottery? Mario should be jumping on walking mushrooms and sinking into sewer pipes! And that business where you throw a potion and it turns into a door is cool and all, it just doesn't have that Mario Brothers flavor.

And now I know. Ah, sweet knowledge, how you will let me sleep at night.

Hahaha, wow, I never knew that.

Man.. I haven't played SMB2 in a long time. I've got a craving for it now.

That does explain a lot. Almost too much.

The REAL version of SMB2 was released in Japan and looked a lot like SMB1. The game that was released in the US as SMB2 was based on a completely different game, and they just changed some sprites to Super Mario characters. However, there remained some artifacts from trying to turn one game into another. Eventually, SMB2 was released in the US in some package deal as like "the lost levels" or something like that.

Perhaps I should read these articles more carefully.. :)

I think it worked out pretty good for us, because I do think SMB2 is a cool game and it probably wouldn't have gotten as much exposure in the US if it hadn't been tied to the Mario Bros juggernaut.

It is kind of sad though, because now all the theories that Adam and I cooked up about this are shot to hell. My favorite theory was the one where the big difference between SMB1 and SMB2 reflected the phenomenon in evolution where early organisms show greater diversity and things become more similar over time.
