Acid rain in Columbia River Gorge

Posted by gizmo at 11:47 AM in environment . | 4 Comments

Since enviromental topics seem to be hot today...

I thought Oregon was a nice clean place. Apparently polution from Portland (the Portland General Electric coal burning power plant in particular) drifts over to the gorge creating acid rain and fog as caustic as that in Pittsburgh with a pH of 4.5 (typical rain water has a pH of 5).

Nothing has made me want to buy a hybrid car for my next vehicle more, or as in tomo's post, forgo the car all together and use exclusively public transit. I think they just approved plans to open a casino at the gorge, which will only exacerbate the problem with the increased traffic.

Fortunately PGE allows us to chose where our energy comes from. They have a number of renewable and "green" options that cost only a few cents more per kWhr.

Sometimes the "green" options are cheaper than the soot producing ("black?") ones. It just depends on the market.

As Gizmo and I discussed on Saturday, I always forget how gross exhaust is until I'm sucking it down for a few miles. My goal is to bike twice a week, more if my legs and the weather cooperate.

Biking and public transport is totally the way to go in portland. I don't have a car and I ride the train to work every day. I sometimes get a ride back from climbing at the rock gym, and I need rides to go on climbing day-trips, but other than that, it rulz.

You're trying to get me to move there, aren't you?

You should find or get someone to start a car coop so you can have access to a car when you want to climb.
