Sleater-Kinney doesn't want you downloading their new album

It's scary to imagine that this leak might actually affect our livelihoods, but ultimately this isn't about the fear of people not supporting us financially as indie artists. We don't think of 'The Woods' as some product getting out there early, we think of it as our art and lives and dreams. For us it's about respect and about people supporting us by being aware of our artistic intent. We ask that you please respect our wishes to present this record the way we intended.Earlier in the letter "the way we intended" is hazily defined as the music, artwork and lyrics (so having a CD with liner notes I assume). However, I wonder if selling the album via iTunes constitutes presenting the record the way they intended.. their previous albums are for sale there. In that case, the definition of "the way we intended" really means "paying money to play our album on your iPod."

it's very odd how the sleater-kinney site has been lately. they had posted a promo photo of the band, and a lot of the people who are on the sleater-kinney email list were bashing it. suddenly, the photo is taken down and replaced by a photo of chimps (??) now this link has suddenly disappeared as well. anyway, this is quite a contridiction since i believe that either the hot rock or all hands on the band one was available to be downloaded through amazon or krs...and this was before itunes and receiving album artwork. as much as i love sleater-kinney, this is a bit silly. i've heard a few of the sleater-kinney albums before they were released before and it made me want to purchase the album even more when it came out. hearing "leave you behind" with all three band members singing on a recorded song for the first time was unbelievable. i guess the band doesn't see things this way. then again, i also buy the cd and vinyl versions of their albums when they first come out so... being on sub-pop is like being on a major label anyway, maybe that's why things have been odd lately. I agree, is buying online any better than downloading for free? it's not like I can't appreciate and adore the band and their art without the cover, anyway, the cover and lyrics are accessible online too, if that was the real problem. take one beat for example; that song has the most amazing lyrics I've ever seen. just because I downloaded it, am I unable to explore/understand? I'd love to get original cds, but well as far as I know no s-k album was released in Turkey. Then again I still don't buy an album if I'm not 100% in love with the band/album, which is true for s-k cos I'm in love:) Yeah, I like downloading, I don't have a lot of money and original releases cost a bit too much here. I don't think any less of the band when I don't have an original cd. but I guess I'd think less of them if they kept pushing to make me buy the cd when the reason they give isn't even stable (the itunes conflict). But I'd respectfully wait before I download if it was all about the release date; like a surprise, not primarily about money. maybe it was sub pop that forced them to make such an announcement. I love s-k, I hope they don't think this stand is disrespectful and I hope they don't hate me for that, heh.. Posted by: salvo daze at March 14, 2005 10:32 AM |
