iPod Shuffle and Mac Mini announced

Apple.com is getting nailed right now, but they have a site up for the new Mac Mini. Starting at $499 it comes with a 1.25Ghz G4, 40GB HD. You can spend a little more to get a faster processor and a 80GB HD. Video capabilities include DVI out, so it might make a decent media center to hook up to your HDTV.

The iPod Shuffle will come in two flavors. $99 for 512MB and $149 for 1GB. Smaller than the iPod Mini and solid state so it should be very durable.

I love my new iPod and looked them up when I got back. Turns out the fuckers cost the equivalent of somewhere over $550 USD outside North America. Crazy. Posted by: hugh at January 11, 2005 6:48 PM |

You can blame the Euro for that. ; ) Can't you just order them from the US site and have them sent overseas..? Posted by: ryan at January 11, 2005 8:36 PM |

I think I have to buy it with a US bank account, but I'm not sure. It is weird b/c some electronics are equally priced here, but others are more expensive. Now back to talking with La Fawnda in an online chat room...peace out. Posted by: Hugh at January 12, 2005 10:59 AM |

The mini mac looks really cool. Im seriously thinking of getting one when I move next month to use as my entertainment center. All I use my computer for is multimedia and internetting anyway. I wonder if you could turn it into a Tivo... Posted by: gizmo at January 12, 2005 2:37 PM |

gizmo: That is exactly what I want one for, a media hub. I'm suprised Apple doesn't pitch it more as such. Hooked up to your television and stereo, connected to your home network full of music and videos. As for Tivo capabilities, it shouldn't be too difficult. My cable box actually has firewire out for that purpose. If that isn't an option, you could always buy one of those all-in-one video converter deals that can take composite cables or svideo and output to firewire or USB 2.0. I hear there are pretty good USB speakers available now too, so you dont have to depend on the cruddy amp on the headphone jack. Ill have to see if comcast can set me up with a cable box w/ firewire or usb output...so long as you can capture the data coming from the cable it should be basic parsing to get keywords for each tv show and set up a comparison based on your interests. Really, you could build a virtual remote :) Posted by: gizmo at January 13, 2005 12:58 PM |

The audio goes out to the speakers via USB as well? I haven't kept up on things.. My cablebox that has the firewire ports is a motorola box provided by comcast... However it is a HDTV DVR anyway, so using the firewire for DVR capabilities would be redundant. Posted by: ryan at January 13, 2005 1:56 PM |
