The construction of what will be the world's tallest building is set to begin in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The building is going to be roughly 2600ft tall and house 160 stories.

You've been to Dubai?

no.

I hear Dubai leads the way with crazy massive scale construction what with that giant man-made archipelago in the shape of a palm tree...

and as noted in Wired magazine, the U.S. hasn't been doing much skyscraper building at all, especially since 9/11, whereas Asia has been doing so at a steady clip. It wouldn't have been long before several taller buildings were built there.

I wouldn't mind visiting there once this is completed.

I really like the design of this building. It looks powerful. Kind of like a 21st century Empire State Building.

Ryan: good analogy. It does certainly... stand out. Fits well in a somewhat barren place. Already built, modern metropolises with lots of existing skyscraper stock need such "prize" buildings less. I can't help but think this building will basically be another island they are building.

Speaking of tall structures, check out the new world's highest bridge.

A friend of mine is from Paris and told me about that bridge in France. Said it cost $400million euros to build or something. $6 euros is the toll to cross.
