Voting experiences...
Posted by gizmo at 03:03 PM in politics . | 25 Comments
I was just wondering if anyone had any interesting experiences voting today. Id really like to know what these "challengers" in ohio actually do at the polls.
My experience was the most patriotic thing, ever...
I went to a elementary school to vote, pretty standard. But then the 5th grade band came in to practice (I guess we were in some multi purpose room) and played "America the Beautiful" I was wondering if a bald eagle was going to fly out of the rafters... Some guy there was wearing a tshirt that said "Vote or Die." It made me glad i was voting and not dying.
Though the best part was getting to vote for John McCain. He is the only politician I like, so I was glad that I got a chance to vote for him.

Voting went well for me this morning. It was nice, I just had to walk across the street to vote. Living downtown is convenient sometimes. ; ) Posted by: ryan at November 2, 2004 3:07 PM |

Gizmo, that is so funny. It's cool that you got to vote for McCain. I got to vote for someone named Fingerhut, which was not entirely the reason I voted for him, but it helped. I voted absentee a few weeks ago, so that I could stop paying attention to the election. I have not regretted it. Posted by: brette at November 2, 2004 3:42 PM |

I live in San Francisco. However I think have to vote in Sebastopol. I have no desire to burn 30$ in gas and bridge tools to drive up to there and vote when it won't matter. Should I vote? Posted by: Dan at November 2, 2004 4:00 PM |

Yes Dan, you should vote. You should be able to vote with a provisional ballot in San Francisco if you are registered to vote in Sebastopol. I think you can do a sort of change of address on the fly. Call the county registrar's office to find out. You may have to bring mail sent to your current address. I voted this morning to DMX seranading me with "Y'all gon make me lose mind! Up in here! Up in here!" Posted by: karen at November 2, 2004 5:00 PM |

I left work 3 hours early, hoping to beat the lines. It still took an hour and a half. 4 years ago it took me 10 minutes - during rush hour. No party reps at my station, but not surprising considering I live in suburbia. Posted by: polamex at November 2, 2004 5:13 PM |

Actually that is not what provisional ballot is for. Casting a provisional ballot when you are legally registered elsewhere will result in your vote being thrown out. The provisional ballots are to help the government in the case of a screwup like accidently not registering a voter properly. Basically they are a safety net for the governments sake. Not an aid to voters who can't find their way to the proper polls. Posted by: ryan at November 2, 2004 5:18 PM |

Anyone else get lots of phone calls and visits to their door remind them to vote? MoveOn called me yesterday to make sure I knew where to vote, they also called me today to make sure my voting experience was ok. A recorded Bill Clinton called me yesterday reminding me to vote. I have also had multiple visits to my door over the past two days. Posted by: ryan at November 2, 2004 5:30 PM |

Okay sorry, maybe someone was right and I'm not capable of rational thought after all. Posted by: karen at November 2, 2004 5:32 PM |

Ryan - maybe cuz you are in a battleground state? I havent gotten any phone calls or door visits. However Phoenix is endless suburbia, so maybe its too much of a chore to go door to door here. I also have a sign on my door that says "I love voters, they taste good" Maybe that is why no one knocked. Posted by: gizmo at November 2, 2004 5:39 PM |

It took me a total of 5 minutes to vote today. I live in Ohio and work at a church that is also a polling place. The voting line is insane. Its like a three hour wait to vote. The challengers outside the polls just ask people when they leave,"Did everything go alright?" They are kind of annoying in my opinion. Posted by: adam m at November 2, 2004 6:01 PM |

I'm sadly cant vote ... didnt register... *sweat* and also, im not very informed about the political issues that are going on... but... my girl friend voted and came back... she had the worse time... someone at the polls kept screaming "Vote for BUSH! Vote for BUSH!!" then he got dragged out by security when he screamed and shouted cuss words at some ppl that liked Kerry... wierd day for her... I dunno how it's gonna be... but... I still wish for Clinton to be back... even though he cant be pres no more... *sad face* Sigh Posted by: akumei at November 2, 2004 6:21 PM |

I voted last week over dinner and a few Becks. I read through all the tons of pamphlets, issue descriptions, and the horrid directions for how to package the thing after checking for hanging chads. Left it till the next morning to make sure that I hadn't, by mistake, punched any Republican spots after those Becks ;) It was nice to sit with my laptop, music, and a beer, look at the websites of candidates I had questions about, and then vote. Karen: I don't see what that has to do with rational thought... I was just providing my understanding of the purpose of provisional ballots... Posted by: ryan at November 2, 2004 9:07 PM |

Woke up this morning and walked down the block to vote... took about 15 minutes. It is indeed nice to live downtown. A gang of Asian girls was waiting to make sure I wasn't being oppressed or anything. Then I headed over to another polling station where I met up with some friends and coworkers. We drove down to Toledo and hooked up with MoveOn down there where we fanned out to connect with any remaining voters who hadn't voted yet. We were there until polls closed in Ohio. Ryan, buddy, that was us calling on you to make sure you didn't need a ride or a babysitter or anything! And to help people find their polling stations. The only problem I had was when I was wearing a shirt that advocated for a local medical marijuana initiative when I was at the polling station... I had to take that off. ;) Posted by: agent1073 at November 2, 2004 9:14 PM |

Karen was alluding to a certain someone who likes to state that some of the ladies of disjointed (we should make a calendar!) aren't capable of rational thought. Especially liberal-leaning ladies. Anyway, I waited 2.5 hours in line to vote. It was ridiculous. I have never had to wait in line to vote. Ever. But it sure was satisfying. You can use a provisional ballot if you are registered elsewhere but have moved. You go to your new polling place, and have proof of residence, and they give you a paper ballot. That's what they do in Ohio, anyway. Apparently, you can also use one if you're sick of waiting in line, as they are currently having people who are still in line in Franklin County vote by provisional ballot. D'oh! It's supposed to be "a long night in Ohio". Posted by: Emily at November 2, 2004 9:17 PM |

Tomo: I'm not complaining at all about the MoveOn phonecalls. Quite the contrary, I am glad that someone was calling voters the day before election day making sure voters knew where to go. Posted by: ryan at November 2, 2004 9:36 PM |

Emily, Karen: I've been grouped with Dude now? Hahaha. Awesome. Posted by: ryan at November 2, 2004 9:41 PM |

No, I think Karen was just making reference to the Dude and how he tends to say that we aren't capable of rational thought, not commenting on you, ryan :) Although I should probably let her speak for herself. Posted by: Emily at November 3, 2004 9:55 AM |

"Aren't capable of rational thought"... now would I ever be so mean and insensetive?!?! By the way, it's 11:33am, less than 30 minutes before Kerry's concession speech and all I have to say is: ****Begin celebratory Music**** HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..... Dude, are you serious? I'm not willing to go through past comments to find the numerous occassions on which you've said I'm not capable of rational thought. But it's out there. Wow, that's an awful lot like saying that the war is unwinnable, and then saying "no, no, that's not what I meant". Posted by: Emily at November 3, 2004 2:13 PM |

Yeah, I was joking. Often my jokes are for my own benefit and tend to confuse others. Posted by: karen at November 3, 2004 2:36 PM |

OK...I'm willing to call a truce if you mail me the "Ladies of Disjointed" Calandar. In fact, I won't bomb those of you who are in red states if you do that :o) Posted by: Dude at November 3, 2004 5:10 PM |

Is the thing behind that link safe to click on at work??? :o) Posted by: Dude at November 4, 2004 4:26 PM |

Just clicked it at home...probably a good thing. Not exactly what I was hoping for. In war, that's refered to as an escalation, but I won't bite. :o) Posted by: Dude at November 4, 2004 9:57 PM |
