G.O.P. in Ohio Can Challenge Voters at Polls

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Tuesday, Nov. 2 - In a day of see-sawing court rulings, a Federal appeals court ruled early Tuesday morning that the Republican Party could place thousands of people inside polling places to challenge the eligibility of voters, a blow to Democrats who argued those challengers will intimidate minority voters.

Nice to see American democracy remains intact! I can't believe that some court actually decided that people's right to observe the voting process and question things (if necessary) was unconstitutional. Good thing this got to someone with a clear head...poll watchers are as American as apple pie. Posted by: Dude at November 2, 2004 1:44 PM |

Wow, this is the closest I've come to agreeing with Dude. The people should be from the FEC though, not one party. Posted by: Hugh at November 2, 2004 2:48 PM |

Well then we don't agree...the government watching the government watch people vote is scary enough, without forbidding average citizens access to the process. Again the key is AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT INTERFERE OR SLOW DOWN THE PROCESS. Besides, you can't have FEC reps at every polling place. Posted by: Dude at November 2, 2004 3:06 PM |

Dude: Yeah, you're right...the party that is in power watching over people is much better than a Committee with the purpose of making sure things run correctly. I almost wish it was the Democratic party that had people watching, just to hear how you would respond ;) Posted by: Hugh at November 2, 2004 6:57 PM |

Hugh: the republicans did not win the exclusive right to watch over the polls. The ruling allows for a member of each party to oversee each polling place. It is the republicans who fought the courts for this right. Posted by: ryan at November 2, 2004 9:40 PM |
