Would you let your kids on the Internet?

I think many of the regulars here spent a lot of time during their impressional youth years on the the Internet. My question is, if you had a 13 year old of your own, what restrictions (if any) would you put on their Internet usage? Would you monitor their activities? Do you think the Internet has taken a turn for the better or the worse in terms of safety for youth since you were that age?

Let me start by saying that for someone who is single, I think a lot about what child rearing. I don't belive in censorship, so I would not restrict what my childern viewed on the internet. However, I will restrict how much time they can spend on it. I read that for elementary school age childern 2 hours of total 'tube' time (tv, comptuers, video games etc.) a day is apropriate, though I still think thats a lot.

There should be balance in your activities to some extent, but I don't think there's any reason for keeping children away from the internet. I don't care if kids look at porn.

I think two hours a day of tv/video games is way more than appropriate.. maybe kids can still recover from that much bombardment but we should never say that we recommend that kids watch tv. Just like, even though sugar/sweets/junk is at the 'top' of the food pyramid, it does not mean that parents should make sure their kids eat some candy everyday.

I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I definately think there is an age at which unrestricted internet access is innapropriate. Maybe it is not 13.. but an 8 year old shouldn't have access to porn at their fingertips. I'm not saying a 13 year old *should*, but at some point there is a level of maturity that has formed that can make better decisions about such things.

As for the 2 hours limits: I can see that in regards to television and video games, at least on schooldays. I certainly spent a lot of time in front of a television as a kid, more than 2 hours a day. I turned out ok, maybe not as bright as some of you, but I'm happy with myself. ; )
