What happened to Gopher?

I found myself reminiscing about the days of gopher last night when I decided to find out if there are any gopher sites still alive these days.

For non IE users:Gopher is alive!
For IE users:Gopher is alive!... kinda

No idea what I am talking about? Wired's quick rundown of what gopher was, is, and will be.

As a sidenote, some of you may remember the gopher exploit in Internet Explorer that was discovered 2 years ago. An exploit dating back to the days of NCSA Mosaic. It looks like their solution to the problem may have been to disable gopher completely.
