Technology to save the environment

Speaking of extremophiles, Wired News covers the discovery of a fellow bacterium that eats styrene (used in making Styrofoam) to make biodegradable plastic. Sounds like a great way to use new biotechnology to patch some of the problems caused by the industrialization of yesterday's technology.

Wired News also covered another low tech method of converting today's environmental problems into something inert -- an ancient Brazilian technique for converting greenhouse gases created from burning coal into fertilizer. I'm sure these are the kinds of technologies that the industrial polluters of the world (and the politicians who protect them) are praying for while doing little to help develop.
