McDonald's outsourcing drive thru window

No, it's not a joke. McDonald's has begun to outsource the drive-thru window at some locations. You speak your order into the microphone, a call center in Colorado listens to your order, types it into a computer and sends it off to the kitchen of the McDonald's you are at. McDonald's claims a 30 second gain per order using the new system. Read more here.

Ok. Setting aside my disgust for McDonald's as a dietary option I think this development is badass and was inevitable. I'm kinda surprised it's only going so far as Colorado although I'm sure that will change. I would still prefer using the kiosk over having to speak to someone though. I don't really feel bad about McJobs disappearing either.

PA & NJ's coveted Wawas use kiosks for ordering/customizing your hoagies. I would definately like to see something like this rolled out into the rest of the fast food market.

I don't think something like this could ever be shipped overseas. It seems too time sensitive to risk any sort of language or accent barrier.

I've had plenty of language/accent barrier problems with McDonald's employees, face to face. ; )

Hah! Man you're all so racialist, I'm outta here.

Hahah Ryan. Good point. Can McDonald's employees be of any lower quality? I really don't think they can.

I've had language barrier problems with McDonald's employees who are white and supposedly speak a similar dialect of English to mine! :o)

Seriously, sounds like a pretty pointless system...with lots of potential for error, and little potential for improvement.

Actually I think this system is an excellent solution for eliminating errors.

If the person I am giving my order to is focused on only the task of taking my order, they are more likely to hear me say "no pickles" than someone who is listening to my order while making someones change or preparing someone elses order at the same time.

Ay yi yi! Not only are they outsourcing all the other jobs in this country, now they can't even handle a Mickey D's drive through! Now, I know it's only to another state, but honestly. 20 seconds? Do you know how much earth-polluting energy is used to transmit already sickeningly obese people's orders for more deep-fried, GMO-infused "food"? That is totally unnecessary.
