Kryptonite Locks hacked with Bic Pen

At first I didn't believe this... then I tried it. Takes me less than 5 seconds to pop the lock. These locks are the industry standard and this secret is out all over the place. Slashdot discussion here, no wonder their website is down.
Update: Website back up. I called Kryptonite this morning. They said they will be making a decision about what they are going to do for their customers tomorrow. If you call they will take down your lock types and key numbers and will call you back about what they are going to do.

Locked up in my apartment for the time being. Tracy's as well. Our locks were $80 a piece! Posted by: ryan at September 16, 2004 9:46 AM |

I meant the new one that you just got today from the street. :) Man $80 bucks, that's rough. Posted by: polamex at September 16, 2004 12:47 PM |

Ahh yes. My new *bikes*, plural. But seriously, just on my walk to the cafe and back this morning I saw about a dozen bikes locked up with these locks. I told a couple of dudes at the cafe about it who had their bikes with them, they about shit their pants. I have a feeling there will be a lot of missing bikes over the coming weeks. I took my bike to get fixed at the bike store yesterday (moving company beat it up) and asked the guys who worked there if they'd heard about the bic pen/lock thing -- they had just finished breaking a lock. Posted by: brette at September 17, 2004 10:32 AM |

The article made a good point about how those types of locks are used on other things -- I've seen computers in somewhat public locations (grad labs, national institutes of health) locked to desks with them. Posted by: brette at September 17, 2004 12:11 PM |
