freeipods, worth the spam?

Posted by ryan at 02:41 PM in internet . | 14 Comments

Over the past month I started getting emails from friends and family to sign up at freeipods.com. The deal is, you sign up at the site and sign up for one of their "offers" (AOL trial, teeth whitening trial, etc etc..) and then get five people to do the same. Most of the deals can be cancelled without spending a dime (like AOL). If five people sign up, you get a free ipod. Sounds like a scam right? I thought so until I started finding articles all over the net about people actually getting their ipods. Seems the company running this deal even has a good record with the BBB. Turns out they do lose money to the people who actually get 5 referrals, but enough people get 4 or less that they turn a profit. So yeah, sign up for a little bit of spam and hook me up with an ipod. I'll let you know if I ever get one. ; )

There is a whole website dedicated to this website -- some people have tried to pull tricks to get ipods for free, but the site is a bit smarter than that. For instance, if you sign up for something like AOL you need to provide your CC# and mailing address. Multiple email addys won't help you out.

Speaking of ipod minis, have you gotten yours? Have you had any problems?

Am I the only one who thinks iPod is WAY overpriced?

I honestly don't think they are over priced. If anything, I think the 128Mb Mp3 players that run upwards of $100 are the rip-offs.

No doubt that's over priced, but c'mon. We've had this technology for years, there is no reason 15 gigs should cost 300 dollars. It's just a hard drive, that's it. $150 may be reasonable, but 300 bucks? No damn way.

Well, it is not just a hard drive. You've got a miniture hard drive, firewire, audio, the wheel and a screen. All being driven by a slick little operating system. All packaged in something that fits in your pocket.

When the ipod first came out it was $499 for 5 gigs, and those ipods were a bit chunkier than the ones out today.

I always thought they were a ripoff too, until I started using one.

And they wouldn't be so expensive (for me) if you guys would sign up at freeipods.com! ; )

Hahaha, true dat R-Dogg.

They are just applepriced. Which means overpriced and your hipster ass will pay too much for it and love it. It's not the technology you're buying. It's the image.

Apple certainly puts a premium price on their hardware, but the ipod isn't that overpriced when you compare it to the competition. The creative nomad will run you just about $270.

As for hipster appeal, I built an ipod holder into my ironic trucker cap. No one can stop me now!

Hahaha, I have to agree with Tomo on this one. I still don't think the iPod is worth the price. Maybe it is just hipster-sheik, regardless of the screen or hyper-space reactor. Although, if it created a worm hole to another dimension...I still wouldn't buy it. My MD player works just as well.

i've had my blue mini since the first week they were out. i must admit that 1. i only bought it because it looks cool, 2. i am a total moron with computer gadgets but i have to have them all, and 3. i have used it every single day for the past six months and it has brought me more joy and entertainment than anything else i've had EVER. also i use it all day at work and it makes me not kill myself. i think it all depends on how much you're gonna use it.
