Cancer Vaccine
Posted by tomo at 11:36 PM in health . | 4 Comments
Scientists have developed a vaccine which may prevent people who have had cancer from relapsing. The vaccine has so far been tested on 19 people after they had surgery to remove cancerous tumours. Two years later, 14 were still cancer free. This compared to two out of seven patients who received a dummy vaccine.

I would be pissed if I later found out I was in the placebo test group. Posted by: ryan at July 23, 2004 10:45 AM |

Yeah rdogg, totally. Human experimentation when dealing with terminal diseases brings up a lot of interesting questions. Like having terminal cancer, hearing about a radical new drug, and not being allowed or able to get your hands on it. Or like you said, sitting in your deathbed withering away while the doctors inject you with water. Yay! Happy fun time! Posted by: polamex at July 23, 2004 11:46 AM |

Haha, I was thinking the same thing, Ryan. It also sucks for everyone else who didn't get to be part of the trial, I guess. And everyone who dies before the vaccine becomes approved by the FDA, etc... Posted by: agent1073 at July 23, 2004 11:53 AM |

Agreed, Polamex. Thankfully we have "bioethics experts" like Leon Kass to help us make such decisions for us. Also, you bring up the point... marijuana, although not a radical drug, is one that the DEA deems to be unacceptable for desparate terminally ill patients to use, even when nothing else works for them. It's a fucked up state that our country is in when we place bad ideology before real human suffering. But that's just how it goes. Anyhow, maybe in the cases of terminal illness, government bureaucracies like the DEA and FDA should just get out of the fucking way. Posted by: agent1073 at July 23, 2004 12:03 PM |
