The graphic doesn't shock me all that much. First, you have to understand that this kind of "what do you believe" survey is going to vary wildly based on the populus surveyed. Take my grandmother for example, a 90 year old Catholic. There is no convincing her of anything but creation. When you grow up and spend half your life believing in something, fossil records aren't going to do much in changing your mind. I suspect this is the case with many of our aging adults. I even think my father believes in creation.. the idea was probobly beaten into him by nuns with rulers through 12 years of Catholic education. ; ) I would be interested in seeing this survery done a few times with different segments of the population based on age. 18-35, 35-59, 60+ Posted by: ryan at May 28, 2004 11:21 AM |

Evolution is a scientific fact. So is this: "matter cannot be created or destroyed"...at least under our current understanding of the physics of our universe. Seems to me like this leaves a BIG question mark at the BEGINNING of the evolutionary process. This despite all attempts to explain it away...or classify people who "still believe in creation" as some dying group of crusties who can't let go of their illuisions. There are also gaps in some of the theories about of humans in the prehistoric era...and some noteworthy controversies about carbon dating. I've read many terrific articles on this topic, form both sides...and neutral. One of the best I read several years ago about how certain old evolutionary theories that have been proven false are being left in textbooks, out of fear that they may discredit the big bang theory (or the notion that humans evolved directly from apes). I think it was called "Survival of the Fakest". Anyway, when I get a chance I will dig some of that stuff up and see if it is linkable. Posted by: Dude at June 1, 2004 7:24 PM |
