LOT/EK Shipping Container Housing

Here is an article about the shipping container housing I mentioned in a comment in the previous post. I'm not sure what kind of shopping malls they were looking at for inspiration in the United States, whether enclosed or strip. I like the direction this movement is going: towards small, cheaply produced, modular housing for an urban setting.

http://www.fabprefab.com/fabfiles/containerbayhome.htm has a bunch of good links and information to container housing, as well as other pre-fabricated home options.

The container idea is new to me. Very interesting when you think about how ships, trucks and trains are all built to carry these containers.

The home built with 12 containers doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.. as it ran over half a million dollars.

I saw an installation at The New Museum of Contemporary Art when I was in New York City last year about portable urban shelters that was really cool. Here's what the museum says about it on its website:

"On the mezzanine between the first and second floors, an installation work by the German artist Roland Boden centers on the mass production of portable urban shelter units that have multiple applications, including flexible shelters for the homeless. Boden's premise is to produce safe habitable "capsules" that blend into their urban surroundings, would not be seen as detrimental to the aesthetics of the streets, and appeal to nomadic urban lifestyles. His installation, which incorporates inexpensive furniture, a video, and a photo mock-up of one of his shelters, conveys the ambience of a shelter in "daytime" mode."
