Loft Cube
Posted by ryan at 12:12 PM in urban . | 24 Comments
Being in the market for buying a place to live, the loft cube interests me. At about 387 square feet it is a bit small, but no smaller than your average Manhattan studio. The cube has some innovative and functional space saving features. If only I could find a building downtown that would allow me to place one of these on top. Price: about $66,000.

Didn't I see something somewhere about people living in those huge shipping containers? Actually I think it was that crazy Chinese kid, Alex Chiu. Posted by: polamex at May 6, 2004 12:18 PM |

Give me a functional metaverse and I can live in a storage unit. Posted by: ryan at May 6, 2004 12:25 PM |

I got a storage unit and took two car loads of stuff to it this morning, so I've been thinking of Hiro Protagonist all day. Posted by: brette at May 6, 2004 12:39 PM |

What a great use of space...and just trendy enough to get chicks (if I weren't married). I just forwarded that link on to a ton of people. One of the coolest things I've seen in a long time... Is it just a concept, or is someone actually living in one of these? Posted by: Dude at May 6, 2004 12:44 PM |

I believe the one you see is a prototype. Not sure what the plans are for marketing these though. They do list a price. In one of the animations they hint at dropping these lofts off with a helicopter -- interesting idea as well. The first one was built on the rooftop, there are some videos of the construction on the website. Posted by: ryan at May 6, 2004 12:52 PM |

Apparently a lot of people found out about the Loft Cube by reading Playboy magazine. Apparently it's actually got quite a few good articles. I like the idea because it adds to housing stock in the city. I can see right now a lot of empty, useless roofs that could be better utilized as Loft Cube cities or maybe even urban gardens! Could something like this be mass-manufactured and be used as slum dwellings? The question everyone asks about the Loft Cube is... if you're supposed to move the Cube from city to city via helicopter, how do you keep all your junk inside from shifting about? It would be kinda neat to be able to move to a different spot in the city or to a new city every season. Polamex: I've read some stuff recently about shipping containers being used as housing. In one instance it was used at a college as dormitories.. I think in the Netherlands. Another was where they were painted and stacked like LEGOs. Living in a LEGO is sure to get you chicks. No offense intended. It's just the parlance of the culture...plus I admit I was fishing for feminists, so my bad for having devious intentions. :o) Posted by: Dude at May 6, 2004 2:32 PM |

Fishing for feminists?? Posted by: MicroMan at May 6, 2004 2:43 PM |

Um...yes. I was actually trying to see if anyone would question my use of the term. Just feeling out my environment, that's all. Posted by: Dude at May 6, 2004 3:03 PM |

Hahahaha. Let me try... I love them hos. ; ) Posted by: ryan at May 6, 2004 3:11 PM |

I prefer the all-inclusive term ass. These things are going to make roof space very expensive. How much does a 387 sq ft studio cost to own in NY? Make the legs out of something roaches can't climb (glass?) and you have primo living space. Posted by: polamex at May 6, 2004 3:46 PM |

Talking with one of my feminist friends last night, and it was interesting to learn how the term has been 'vilified' by certain people. But with people like Rush on the airwaves, it's not surprising. Feminist: A person whose beliefs and behavior are based on feminism Feminism: Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.

Polamex: Depending on where you wanted to live in Manhattan, a 400sqft studio would run you anywhere between $200,000 - $400,000. Posted by: ryan at May 6, 2004 4:10 PM |

Like all words, use of the word chick is context dependent. Since I know that agent1073 is a feminist, I know that when he says chicks, he's making fun of the old usage. Since I don't know Dude, when he used the word chick, I thought, "Is he making fun of someone who would use the word chick and then buy or decorate a place to get one, or does he think women are objects?" That is why I asked. Posted by: brette at May 6, 2004 4:18 PM |

Ok. But what if I use chicks? I am not masogynist, nor do I believe women are objects. However, I wouldn't be making fun of the term if I used it. I would be using it just as I would "dude", as in "look at that dude/chick over there." Posted by: ryan at May 6, 2004 4:27 PM |

Did I really just see someone blame Rush Limbaugh for the use of the term "chicks"? And what's with this... "Since I don't know Dude, when he used the word chick, I thought, "Is he making fun of someone who would use the word chick and then buy or decorate a place to get one, or does he think women are objects?" That is why I asked." You seriously think it's one or the other? I agree with Ryan (amazingly) in that you can certainly use that term in a lighthearted manner without necessarily thinking women are objects. But I'm glad you think you can categorize me so well! Honestly, I wish you well in life...you seem to be a really cool chick. Posted by: Dude at May 6, 2004 6:32 PM |

I do apologize, Dude, for any confusion. I said "the term" and should have been more specific because I was actually talking about the term FEMINISM/T. I was talking about the term "feminist" and was reminded of a Rush show (yes I listen sometimes) where he equated FEMINISTS to NAZIS and started calling them "Feminazis". As for my opinions on the 'chick' thing, I can't put it any better than Ryan did in his last post. Posted by: MicroMan at May 6, 2004 7:23 PM |

Ryan, it would not offend me if you used the word chick. Sorry that I wasn’t clear earlier, but I felt like I was answering your questions. Since I have a really dry sense of humor, I would think it was funny if you used the word chick, because I would think you were making fun of people who use the word chick. Likewise, if you used the word dude. -------------------------------------------------- Dude, I’m glad you so easily categorized me as a person who easily categorizes people.
