An entry all about me

Posted by brette at 11:46 AM in disjointed . | 11 Comments

First, and most importantly
I got new glasses. My glasses mysteriously disappeared at Barton Springs. Being blind without them, I bought a two new frames that were buy-one-get-one-free. My old ones reappeared, so now I have three pairs!

No more student prices at the movies
Officially, I get my MS on 5/22, but since I've turned in my Master's thesis (Title: An Algorithm for Segmenting Nuclei in Confocal Images of Cervical Tissue for Cervical Precancer Detection) and took my last final, I feel done.

Comfort in Routine
Each week I work on the farm on Sundays (last week, I planted okra, weeded the basil patch, and picked Chard), go to yoga Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, (My biggest breakthrough of late is my improved confidence in head stand -- I demonstrated one in front of a Opal Divines on Friday) cook with friends on Wednesdays (last week we made delicious cabbage stuffed collard greens and cauliflower. Yum.), hang out with my surrogate roommates almost every night, swim at the aforementioned Barton Springs at least once a week, drink at the aforementioned Opal Divines at least as often, and catch an occasional show at Emo's or movie at the Dobie. This will all end on Friday, and I'm a bit sad.

Free and Easy Wanderer
My travel plans are:
5/14 New Orleans
5/16 Mammoth Cave
5/17 Columbus
5/27 Chicago
5/30 Ann arbor
6/1 Columbus
6/11 Alaska
7/8 Oregon
7/12 Columbus
7/19 Rochester

When discussing these plans with a coworker, she said I was glowing with excitement, but I think it's the herbs.

No Philly trip planned eh?

You sure sound busy. I seriously need to start making better use of my time. My brain is mushifying.

Mammoth Cave is awesome. You'll really like it.

So like your thesis deals with medical image processing & detection? Is this biology or computer science?

Dude, (as in Brette), Sell are you going to sell t-shirts for you tour?? The ones with all the tour dates on the back would be sweet?

And after spending so many years in Immunology, I would be interested in knowing more about your Thesis paper.

Sounds like fun. How do you afford it all?

Ryan – I actually do plan on going to Philly sometime in the next year. I’m not sure when, though. If I don’t go by April, I’ll probably go then for Liz’s MFA show.

--------------------------------------------

Emily -- Jacqueline suggested it because it’s right off the highway. I remembered that you went a few years ago and had a great time. Hopefully, it won’t rain on us.

--------------------------------------------------

Polamex – Neither, my degree is in Electrical Engineering. Medical imaging processing does cross over into Computer Science and Biology, which is great because I find both really interesting.

--------------------------------------------------

MicroMan – T-shirts are in the works. I don’t know a lot about immunology, but I’d like to learn more. I’m always willing to talk about the pathology of cancer. For example, one of my favorite things about cervical precancer is that if it takes up 1/3 or less of the epithelium, there’s a 70% chance that a women’s own immune system will take care of the lesion, but if it takes up 2/3 or more of the epithelium, there’s a 70% chance that it will develop into invasive cancer. A lab that we collaborate with in Vancouver is doing a study to see if drinking green tea improves the chance that a women’s own immune system will reverse the processes.

--------------------------------------------------

Dude, I’m pretty frugal when it comes to money – I don’t eat out much or buy lots of stuff. Since I have a job lined up in August, I’m not worried about going for broke. I was a bit worried about running out of money, but my sister said she’d lend me some to get me to my first paycheck, if I need it. Hopefully, I won’t.

That is so bad ass. I took an image processing/computer vision class and it was amazing. I'm terribly jealous ;)

That's terrific. You have to take the chance to do something like that when you're young, if you can. I hope you enjoy it!

What's in Columbus, by the way? I notice 3 stops on the tour...

polamex -- thanks

Dude - My parents are in Columbus. Everywhere I'm going I'm staying with friends/family or camping.

Big ups to Cbus!
