Urban Green Space

Fukuoka, Japan, was in need of a new government office building and the only available site was a large two-block park that also happened to be the last remaining green space in the city center. That's one way to make tall buildings more acceptable, although a lot of airspace is lost that way.
On a smaller scale, take a look at this photo. Did you think it was taken between two busy highways? Roads and highways take up so much, not just where the cars go but, as shown here, much space is rendered unusable by surrounding roads. Boston's painfully expensive way of dealing with this is to bury the highways underground. Building elevated highways also isn't ideal because the space beneath (and sometimes on the other side) is underutilized. One nice solution, however, is to simply build bridges over them thereby creating usable space like the I-670 Cap in Columbus.
