S.S. United States

Every time I am in South Philadelphia I can see two decaying smokestacks peaking out near the waterfront. A closer view reveals an enormous abandoned cruise ship, the S.S. United States. The United States was the largest and fastest cruise ship ever built in the US, it now sits in ruins on the Delaware River. A Norwegian company bought the ship last year and has plans to renovate it and restore service.

While I haven't gotten out to photograph it myself yet (too damn cold) -- I found some links with some interesting info and photos of the ship.

As a child I was thrilled by the distintive shape of the SS United States, its tremendous speed, and the lore that surrounded it. I loved to think of the ship as I sat in the back seat of my parent's car, travelling down the highway at 50 mph, that the big ship could travel at that same speed. As an adult I wondered and hoped that the ship had not been scrapped and that one day I could see it. Next best thing was to discover those marvellous panoramic photos that you have put together. Well done! Syd
