Abandoned Bikes

| Stripped, destroyed, and abandoned. You see these bikes locked up and forgotten on the street, often near colleges. Was it destroyed because it couldn't be stolen, abandoned because it was stripped or destroyed? Sometimes bikes in their entirety, slightly rotted, and other times just a skeleton remains or a floating wheel marking the outline of where a whole bike once was. |

I see abandoned bikes any given day I walk around here in Philly. Some people keep their bikes parked and locked up outside -- I think this might lead to wheels and seats getting stolen late at night. This doesn't explain why they never take the rest of their bike. Maybe they have a cheap bike and lose the key to their lock.. I'm not sure. Posted by: ryan at January 12, 2004 5:12 PM |

I left a sucky bike locked to a tree at 71 E Lane. The lock had rusted shut. I wonder if it is still there. Posted by: brette at January 12, 2004 6:24 PM |

They prolly leave the rest of the bike becasue what they take has the best cash/time/risk value. Kind of like a car's seats, engine and transmission. Posted by: polamex at January 12, 2004 9:33 PM |

They don't all look abandoned, though maybe they should be. Posted by: villageidiot at January 12, 2004 9:54 PM |
