Violence In Gaming

Posted by tomo at 02:33 AM in games . | 5 Comments

A dispute between two Counterstrike teams after a match in LA ended with a gun pulled to one kid's head [press release]. As Chris, and others attempted to calm the situation a member/associate of Team BZ ran to his car opened the trunk of the car grabbed a gun and placed it to the head of Chris Hill while other Team Members and associates encouraged the person with the gun to fire!
Combine teenage boys + competitive violent video games + American gun culture and what is the logical outcome? I dunno, this is not Bowling for Columbine. I know that online gaming related gang violence has occured in Asia, and now it's come to Canada and the States. I hear that the BZ kid was an Asian.. Is this the beginning of the Asian-American gang infilitrazn?! We'll just have to wait and see.

Violence occurs anywhere and everywhere. Some people seem to need only the smallest percieved infraction to unleash their fury. This subject is certainly not going to go away any time soon but humans will always fight.
I'm sure someone somewhere fought for an eggo. Are we going to seriously take a look at the competitive nature of eggo commercials? There was a war fought in Central America over the outcome of a soccer game. My point is that the root of violence is not in any particular activity, it's more likely rooted in our own physiology and evolutionary history. At some point in the past we needed to use violence in a way to help propagate our species. It could even have been a desired trait.
In other words our violent tendencies may be an evolutionary hold-over which has proven itself unecessary over time. Therefore I don't believe we can blame Counterstrike or guns or anything else. People choose to do what they do. Our impulses can be controlled, it's continually proven everyday. If they couldn't be controlled we would have a lot more homocides.

Ahh, no more comments. I must assume my argument is rock solid.

or maybe I don't make any sense. That's what I get for drunken posting.

Yeah, we, like other animals, have the tendency to fight as a way to solve disputes and disagreements. Of course, some things trigger this natural tendency more than others. I am less interested in stopping violence than I am in just guessing where it will occur.

We could play "who'll get murdered next". I vote for Dikembe Mutumbo.
