I have found an important supplement to Ryan's Guide to Indie:
SoYouWanna fake being an indie rock expert

Perfect for those of us too lazy to even download and listen to those songs that are only 1 click away. Or don't want to subject themselves to hours of whiny underproduced drivel.

If you want to go a bit deeper and broader (beyond just indie rocker) you may be best off reading A Field Guide to the Urban Hipster or The Hipster Handbook (real books).

The realest music: a symphony of dot-matrix printers and broken power supply fans and degaussing monitors recorded and pressed to vinyl and then digicammed and the grooves decoded using software and replayed via a RAID array of disks.
