Free Heroin

Posted by tomo at 11:33 PM in drugs . | 9 Comments

A few hundred heroin addicts in three Canadian cities will get free heroin under a controversial federally funded new study expected to begin next year. [The Age]

Now that I've got your attention.. you've seen the government-paid ads that end with "marijuana -- it's more harmful than we all thought." In particular, the ones featuring stoned kids driving over other kids. Lies! [Why must I pay to watch lies?] The organization which exists only if drugs like marijuana continue to stay illegal is using a single flawed "study" to support its claims while ignoring Australian researchers who say "It has been impossible to prove marijuana affects driving adversely." [No Proof Cannabis Put Drivers At Risk] It is my belief that alcohol and cars themselves are the real problem, another topic altogether.

"I don't know what is marijuana. Perhaps I will try it when it will no longer be criminal. I will have my money for my fine and a joint in the other hand."
- Canadian PM Jean Chretien

the canadian study looks good. i wonder what the results will be.

did i tell you about the MDMA seminar that i went to at NIH? there was woman who actually got FDA aproval to give people MDMA and then PET scan their brain to see what happens.

The FDA also has approved GHB (infamous date-rape drug) for use in treating Narcolepsy.

brette: I do remember you talking about attending that seminar. I don't remember if you said anything about the results though..

But I'm sure you've heard about the recent finding that the study that found that MDMA (Ecstasy) caused severe damage to monkeys was in fact totally untrue. The monkeys were given extremely high doses of meth, not MDMA at all.

The alarming results, which contradicted previous research and data about actual human use, suggested that even a single evening of MDMA use could lead to permanent and devastating problems. Despite the unexpected results, the Science article was worded to have a political effect and was used to help push through legislation aimed at punishing owners of venues where drugs such as ecstasy are used. [Erowid]

Unfortunately, the damage is already done in terms of FUD/misinformation and bad legislation.

As for GHB: I find it interesting that GHB is now simultaneously Schedule I and Schedule III. Schedule I is for drugs with "no medical value". But "medical" GHB is Schedule III, yet possession of it is still punishable as a Schedule I drug. [Pharmacist.com]

Wait. It gets better. Since all meat and some vegetable products as well as our own bodies contain GHB, which is illegal in any amount (and the vessel weight is considered part of the drug's weight), we have effectively turned all Americans into criminals. [CERI]

I blame the media for unfairly sensationalizing both of these drugs.

the same woman also did a study on the long term effects of MDMA and found that there weren't any. but coke will actually start to fry your brain if you do it frequently for a long time.

Here's my current understanding of the damage to brain that cocaine can cause:

Use of cocaine will cause the dopamine receptors to become overstimulated and then become less in number, making it harder to feel pleasure/stimulation. It also causes blood vessels in the brain to constrict, which in extreme cases can cause a stroke which will have the same devastating consequences as any other stroke. However, this constriction will also decrease the amount of blood available to the brain normally, resulting in loss of brain function. A loss of blood to any part of the brain can cause cells in that part to die.

The end result is depression and decrease in motor and cognitive skills. I can see how less dopamine receptors can result in depression and decrease in motor activity, and I'm just guessing that the reduced blood flow is responsible for the decreased cognitive abilities. But that's all the damage to the brain caused by cocaine that I'm aware of.

I believe meth is also bad for you in similar ways to coke, but I'm not sure on the details.
